VAT on Electronics in Saudi Arabia: What the 15% Means for Your Price

Saudi Arabia charges 15% value-added tax on electronics - the highest rate in the Gulf since it tripled from 5% in July 2020. For a shopper the practical rules are simple: consumer prices must be shown with VAT included, a registered shop must give you a tax invoice, and buying from outside the Kingdom does not avoid the tax. PriceTeq shows every Saudi price exactly as the shop lists it, VAT included, so the number you compare is the number you pay.

Prices you see are VAT-inclusive

Saudi consumer-pricing rules require the displayed price to include VAT, so a laptop listed at SAR 3,449 costs SAR 3,449 at checkout - roughly SAR 450 of it is tax. Shops do not add VAT at the till the way some other markets do.

That is why PriceTeq never strips VAT out or shows a 'before tax' figure for Saudi Arabia: it would make every price look cheaper than it is.

Ask for the tax invoice

A VAT-registered shop issues a tax invoice (فاتورة ضريبية) with its VAT number and, increasingly, a QR code under the ZATCA e-invoicing rules. Keep it: it is your proof of purchase for the warranty and the document a business needs to reclaim input VAT.

A shop that cannot issue a tax invoice is usually selling grey-market stock. The price may be lower, but the warranty path is weaker.

  • Businesses registered for VAT can recover the 15% on laptops and phones bought for the company - the invoice must carry both VAT numbers.
  • A sale price, a bundle or a 'was' price does not change the VAT rate; it is 15% of what you actually pay.

Buying from abroad does not skip the tax

Electronics shipped into Saudi Arabia from another country are assessed VAT (and, for some items, customs duty) at the border above the personal-import threshold, and the courier collects it before delivery. A foreign price that looks 15% cheaper usually ends up level with, or above, a Saudi shop's VAT-inclusive price once tax, duty and shipping are added - and the warranty is abroad.

The threshold and the duty rates change; check the current Saudi customs guidance before relying on a cross-border price.

How this affects comparing prices

Because every Saudi shop prices the same way, comparing VAT-inclusive prices across shops is clean: the cheapest VAT-inclusive price is simply the cheapest price. The traps are elsewhere - storage tier, version, condition and bundles - which the other guides cover.

Frequently asked questions

›Is VAT included in the prices on PriceTeq Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Every SAR price is shown as the shop lists it, with the 15% VAT included.

›What is the VAT rate on electronics in Saudi Arabia?

15%, the standard rate applied to laptops, phones, tablets and accessories since July 2020.

›Can I avoid VAT by ordering a phone from abroad?

No. Imports above the personal threshold are assessed VAT at the border and the courier collects it before delivery; shipping and the foreign warranty usually make the total higher than a local VAT-inclusive price.

A VAT-registered business can recover input VAT on equipment bought for the business, with a proper tax invoice showing both VAT numbers.
