VAT & Warranty on UAE Electronics: What the Price Includes

Every consumer price displayed by a UAE shop must include the 5% VAT, so the number on the shelf - and on PriceTeq - is the number you pay; a shop that quotes a price and then adds VAT at the counter is doing it wrong. The tax invoice you receive is also your warranty document: UAE consumer-protection rules give you a right to repair, replacement or refund on a defective product, but only with proof of purchase that shows the serial number and the date. This guide covers the VAT rules, the invoice, and what warranty actually means on new, imported and refurbished electronics in the UAE.

VAT at 5%: what it is and where you see it

The UAE has charged 5% VAT on most goods, including all consumer electronics, since January 2018. Retail prices shown to consumers have to be VAT-inclusive, so a laptop advertised at AED 3,000 costs AED 3,000 - the AED 142.86 of VAT inside it is shown separately on the invoice but not added at checkout. Business buyers with a tax registration can reclaim it; consumers cannot.

PriceTeq shows every price exactly as the shop lists it, VAT included, so comparisons between shops are on equal terms. Tourists can reclaim VAT on eligible purchases at departure through the official refund scheme, which is one reason some visitors buy electronics here.

  • 5% on all electronics since 2018; displayed consumer prices must include it.
  • The tax invoice itemises VAT and is your proof of purchase for any warranty claim.
  • Tourist VAT refunds exist for eligible purchases; ask the shop for the tagged invoice.

Warranty on new electronics

New laptops and phones sold through official UAE channels carry the manufacturer's regional warranty, typically one year, serviceable at the brand's authorised service centres in the UAE. UAE consumer-protection law additionally obliges the seller to repair, replace or refund a product with a manufacturing defect within the warranty period and to provide spare parts and after-sales service for a reasonable time. The right is yours against the seller, not only the manufacturer - keep the invoice.

Warranty on imported and refurbished units

Imported (non-UAE-spec) products are genuine but the manufacturer's international warranty may or may not cover them locally; phones usually are covered by Apple and Samsung internationally, laptops often are not. In that case the shop's own warranty is what you have, so get its length and terms in writing before paying.

Refurbished units come with the shop's warranty only, typically 3-12 months, and it normally excludes the battery and accidental damage. A reputable refurb shop states this on the listing; if the listing says nothing about warranty, ask before you pay.

  • Official new: manufacturer warranty + your consumer-protection rights against the seller.
  • Imported new: check whether the brand covers it in the UAE; otherwise the shop's warranty applies.
  • Refurbished: shop warranty only, 3-12 months, battery usually excluded.

What to keep and what to check

Keep the tax invoice with the serial number, the box and any warranty card. Before leaving the shop or signing for a delivery, power the device on, check the serial matches the invoice and confirm it is new (first-time setup screen, zero battery cycles on a laptop, 100% battery health on a phone). If a product turns out to be defective, go to the seller first with the invoice; the UAE Ministry of Economy's consumer-protection channel is the escalation if the seller does not honour the warranty.

Frequently asked questions

›Do the prices on PriceTeq include VAT?

Yes. UAE shops are required to display VAT-inclusive consumer prices and PriceTeq shows the shop's listed price unchanged, in AED.

›Can a shop add VAT at checkout?

Not for a consumer price that was displayed without it - displayed prices must be inclusive. If a shop tries to add 5% at the counter, the advertised price was non-compliant; buy elsewhere.

›What warranty does a refurbished laptop have?

The shop's own warranty, typically 3 to 12 months, covering defects but usually not the battery. There is no manufacturer warranty on a refurbished unit unless it is a manufacturer-certified refurb.
